The historic small town of Gelnhausen is located by the Kinzig River and with its beautiful old part of town it is a popular destination for tourists from all over the country. Many buildings and streets from the Middle Ages are still preserved, as well as the witch tower and the imperial palace, which once served as the residence of the city's founder Barbarossa. The Barbarossa town does not only have outstanding sights. Throughout the old town, lovingly restored half-timbered buildings present themselves alongside evidence of medieval architecture. It is not without reason that Gelnhausen was voted the second most beautiful city in Hessen in 2012 by viewers of "HR-Fernsehen". The so-called Barbarossa town has many restaurants, cafés and other places to take a break for young and old.
